Calligrapha spiraeae, Ninebark Calligrapha Beetle image

Subject: Ninebark Calligrapha Beetle, Calligrapha spiraeae

Location: Canaan Valley along the Blackwater River, near Thomas, West Virginia

Stock Number: 07-25686 (above) and 07-25677 (below)

Comments: A beautiful, uncommon beetle in the genus Calligrapha. One reason the beetle is uncommon is that the foodplant, Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius), is fairly uncommon.

In West Virginia, this beetle is most often encountered in June, but can be found anytime between May and August.
