Comments: This species is most often encountered as an adult in July and August.

Viewed from above, the head is not easily seen, hence the generic name which means "hidden head." Of course, in the photo above, taken face-on, the head does not seem so hidden.

In this particular species, Dillon and Dillon in A Manual of Common Beetles of Eastern North America report "Male much smaller than female and with surface color of elytra black."
