Caribou Male, Rangifer tarandus photograph

Subject: Caribou male, Rangifer tarandus

Location: Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska

Stock Number: 05-31140

Comment: Not so long ago scientists believed there were three species of North American Caribou. Now the experts have combined the species under the name Rangifer tarandus. Even the reindeer of northern Europe are members of this species.

Both male and female Caribou have antlers, but on the females the antlers seldom exceed 20 inches in length (51 centimeters).

The Caribou is the only member of the deer family to live above the tree-line twelve months of the year.
