Io Moth, Automeris io

Subject: Io Moth, Automeris io

Location: Upshur County, West Virginia

Stock Number: 2200

Comments: Among the larval food plants of the Io Moth are oak, tulip poplar, elm, and sassafras, but there are many other hardwood species they feed upon. The larvae may also feed on herbaceous plants.

The caterpillars have spines that can imbed in humans’ skin, leading to a mild but relatively long-lasting sting.

Adults are most noteable for the large eyespots, which undoubtedly frighten many a would-be predator.
