Subject: Bonaire Anole, Anolis bonairensis Location: Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles Stock Number: 6961 Comment: This species is found only on the island of Bonaire. The drab, mottled coloration allows these lizards to blend in very well with the branches on which they live. Once a male spots a rival male, however, he will give up attempts at camoflage and display his bright orange dewlap. In the Papiamentu language widespread on Bonaire, locals call this lizard Totèki or Kaku. Related image: A Golden Tegu lizard from Trinidad. |
