Anhinga anhinga image from the Everglades

Subject: Anhinga, Anhinga anhinga

Location: Everglades National Park, Florida

Stock Number: MAB-33

Comments: Anhingas use their sharp, serrated bill to impale fish, which they then toss into the air and catch in their mouth, swallowing the prey head-first.

Like Cormorants, Anhingas lack the oil that makes their plummage water-proof. They have to take time to dry their wings in the sun and breeze.

This nice-looking male bird was at home in Everglades National Park.
