Subject: A Limpkin perches on a lakeside railing along Lago de Yojoa, Honduras. Location: Parque Eco-Arqueologico Las Naranjas, Honduras Stock Number: 09-24171 Comments: The Parque Eco-Arqueologico Las Naranjas not only protects architectural treasures of the pre-Lencan culture, it also protects important lakeside habitat for species such as the Limpkin, a bird scarce over much of its range. The lonely Limpkin is the only member of its family, Aramidae. Its call has been described as a wail. Limpkins have virtually a single food interest, and that is the apple snail. They live where apple snails are found, meaning that Limpkins are never far from fresh water habitat. The word Limpkin refers to the bird’s awkward, halting gait. |
