Lonchoptera furcata / bifurcata image

Subject: Pointed-Winged Fly, Family Lonchopteridae, Lonchoptera bifurcata (= L. furcata)

Location: Upshur County, West Virginia

Stock Number: 06-39439

Comment: This is the most common species in the southeastern United States, and is especially common in disturbed habitats. The pictured fly is a female (note the blunt ovipositor).

This species is largely parthenogenic in North America, with only seven males ever having been collected. In certain other locations in the world males are more common in this species.

Thanks to John Klymko for the identification and information.
