Subject: Tricolored Bumble Bee, Bombus ternarius

Location: Brule River State Forest, Wisconsin

Stock Number: 07-37555 (above), and 07-37556 (below)

Comments: This bee has been collected across the United States and much of Canada. Intrepid searcher John Asher has collected this species from Georgia to the Yukon Territory. Northern records of the Tricolored Bumble Bee are more common than southern ones, however.

This is not a diminutive species; both workers and males range up to 12 or 13 mm in length. Queens reach almost 20 mm.
