Genus Compsobata, Neria, Micropezidae, fly image

Subject: Stilt-Legged fly, family Micropezidae, Compsobata sp.

Location: Beaver Creek Marsh, Lincoln County, Oregon

Stock Number: 07-24301

Comments: This fly measured about 7 mm and was living in a marsh less than half a mile from the Pacific Ocean's pounding surf.

As the common name of the family says, these flies have long legs. In fact, the second and third pairs of legs are each longer than the body.

Neria and Compsobata are synonyms; Neria may be the valid generic name although Nearctica.com uses Compsobata.

Thanks to Dr. Andrey Ozerov and Dr. Chen Young for providing the ID of this nice Micropezid.
