Airora cylindrica, Bark-Gnawing Beetle, image

Subject: Bark-Gnawing Beetle, Airora cylindrica female

Location: Upshur County, West Virginia

Stock Number: 06-13357

Comments: This female measured about 11 mm in lenth. Males are much smaller and may be only 5 mm in length.

Members of this genus are similar to the beetles in the genus Temnophila, but note that in Temnophila the tibial spines are on the front legs only. In this photo of Airora, by contrast, the tibial spines are easily seen on the front and middle legs. The spines in Airora are present on the tibiae of the back legs as well, but are not easily seen in this photo.
