Long-legged fly from Minnesota, Dolichopus remipes

Subject: Long-legged Fly with fringed hind tarsi, Dolichopus remipes

Location: Beside Raven Lake, Lake County, northeast Minnesota

Stock Number: 07-37401

Comments: Having fringed hind tarsi is an unusual trait in the family Dolichopodidae (Long-legged Flies). While the genus Dolichopus has a huge number of species in it, Dolichopus remipes with its distinctive fringes is not easily confused with any other species.

According to A Catalog of the Diptera of America North of Mexico (Stone et al, 1965), this species is found from Maine and Manitoba to Washington state, and as far south as Wisconsin. It is also found in northern Europe.
