Comments: This photo was taken in 1984 at the site of an old copper mine near the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) as well as later groups attempted to plant trees and vines to stop the erosion damage, but the plants seldom flourished because of the lack of topsoil.
