Comb-Clawed Beetle, Androchirus erythropus photograph

Subject: Comb-Clawed Beetle, Androchirus erythropus. Dorsal view above and a lateral view below.

Location: Upshur County, West Virginia

Stock Number: 5-8656 (above) and 5-8657 (below)

Comments: Sometimes Comb-Clawed Beetles are considered a separate family, but current wisdom seems to be that they make up a subfamily of Tenebrionidae, the Darkling Beetles.

Members of this group are often found under bark, and sometimes on flowers. Some species will fly to lights. The species shown here is one of only two in the genus that occur in America north of Mexico.
