Earth-Boring Dung Beetle, Bolbocerosoma farctum

Subject: Bulbous Earth-Boring Beetle, Bolbocerosoma farctus (farctum)

Location: Albemarle County, Virginia

Stock Number: 4627-05

Comments: A stout-bodied beetle, seldom encountered.

Members of the Earth-Boring Dung Beetles group often spend nearly all of their adult lives in burrows—typically under dung or carrion, which are the larval food sources.

The Earth-Boring Dung Beetles sometimes are said to comprise the family Geotrupidae, while some experts believe Geotrupidae should actually make up subfamily Geotrupinae of the Scarab Beetle family, Scarabaeidae.
