Comments: This venerable species was first described by Thomas Say in 1829. It is found from Alaska and British Columbia to California, and from Ontario and Quebec to North Carolina.

Look for this distinctive in the early Spring, when it is one of the first larger flies to be active. Its length is about 10-11 mm.
