Subject: Long-nosed Leopard Lizard, Gambelia wislizenii

Location: Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico

Stock Number: 07-48281

Comments: Members of the family Crotaphytidae are found only in North America, and are divided into two genera: the Collared Lizards (Crotophytus) and the Leopard Lizards (Gambelia).

Long-nosed Leopard Lizards feed on insects such as grasshoppers, and on other lizards. Snakes and small rodents round out their diet.

These lizards are fast runners, and will run with their front legs raised to increase their speed.

The range includes part of northern Mexico, the Rio Grande Valley, and north to Oregon and Idaho.
