American Golden-Plover, Pluvialis dominica

Subject: American Golden-Plover, Pluvialis dominica

Location: Along the Dempster Highway, Yukon, Canada

Stock Number: 09-36344

Comments: The bird shown here is in breeding plumage. Males and females both boast high-contrast markings on the head and neck during breeding season. The non-breeding plumage is considerably more drab, in both sexes.

American Golden-Plover’s breeding territory is in the chilly northern regions, primarily in Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

The nests are in small depressions on the tundra, and typically are lined with reindeer lichen. Eggs are 3-4 in number, and are buff-colored with darker spots.
