Cyanocorax yncas, Green Jay image

Subject: Green Jay, Cyanocorax yncas

Location: Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Texas

Stock Number: MWG-29

Comments: In the United States, this beautiful bird is found in southernmost Texas and nowhere else. Outside the United States the species is found in much of central America and in the northern part of South America.

Like many other members of the family Corvidae (Jays and Crows), Green Jays are gregarious, feeding in small groups. Even nesting is communal, with the parents assisted in their guarding duties by their offspring from previous nestings.

Two National Wildlife Refuges, Santa Ana and Laguna Atascosa, are excellent places to view Green Jays.
