Comments: This species ranges along the Pacific coast from Alaska to as far south as the northernmost of California's Channel Islands. While seldom found far from the ocean, Steller Sea Lions do sometimes swim short distances up freshwater rivers.

Squid and fish compromise most of their diet, and in pursuit of their prey sea lions can dive nearly 500 feet.

The similar California Sea Lion is smaller and darker, has a high forehead, and is much more vocal with its honking barks.
