Common Murre image, Uria aalge

Subject: Common Murre, Individual and Rookery

Location: Round Island, Alaska

Stock Number: 05-31017 (above) and 05-31026 (below)

Comments: Like all other members of the Auk family, Common Murres are marine, and only come to shore to breed and raise their young.

Eggs of the Common Murre are unusually variable in color and markings, allowing a bird to recognize its own egg when returning to the cliffs, even when hundreds of other birds' nests are present.
