White-tailed Deer, West Virginia image in snow

Subject: White-tailed Deer, Odocoileus virginianus

Location: Canaan Valley, West Virginia

Stock Number: DCP-1848

Comments: West Virginia deer have increased greatly in number over the last century. Despite a popular hunting season in the state, deer continue to do a great deal of damage to gardens.

Deer are active all winter, feeding on evergreen plants and the twigs of deciduous trees and shrubs. They may kick aside snow cover if it is not too deep, in order to reach the grass underneath.
