Onega cf. freytagi, Leafhopper dorsal photo

Subject: Sharpshooter, Onega cf. freytagi

Location: Tandayapa Valley near Nanegalitos, Ecuador

Stock Number: 08-29598 (above) and 08-29513 (below)

Comments: Photographed in the cloud forest of Ecuador, just a little north of the equator.

These are two individuals but presumably of the same species. The one above was attracted to lights, while the one below was at rest on a plant.

The neotropical genus Onega was first described in 1908, and is in the subfamily Cicadellinae and the tribe Cicadellini. Leafhoppers in the genus are large (up to 16 or 17 mm), and have a concave area at the apex of the crown. There is a transverse ridge where the crown meets the frons.
