Subject: Double-crested Cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus

Location: Everglades National Park, Texas

Stock Number: MAD-27

Comments: The word Cormorant is derived from the French which is derived from the Latin "Corvus marinus," or Sea Crow.

This species shares many traits with the Anhinga, including the need to dry its feathers after swimming or diving, and its habit of riding low in the water so that all or most of its body is submerged. Unlike the Anhinga, the Cormorant has a hooked bill, helping insure that fish do not get away.
