Canoe rigged with sail, Salado Barra, Honduras

Subject: Garifuna man with his dugout canoe, rigged up with a sail to catch the ocean breezes on the mangrove-lined waterway.

Location: Salado Barra (sometimes called Barra Salado), Atlántida department, Honduras

Stock Number: 09-24284

Comments: This Garifuna man has largely done away with the need to paddle his handmade canoe, by rigging a sail to take advantage of the breezes coming off the Caribbean Sea.

The Garinagu (plural of Garifuna) live along the Caribbean coast of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and as far south as Nicaragua. They are descended from African slaves and from the Arawak and Carib native peoples.

Essentially all Garinagu are fluent in Spanish (or sometimes English in Belize). A majority also speak the Garifuna language.

More information about the Garinagu people is found in a September 2001 article in National Geographic.
