Comment: Less well-known than White Sands National Monument are the Mescalero Sands, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Key habitat for more than one threatened species, the Sands are about fifteen miles wide at their widest, and measure about forty miles from north to south.

The dominant plant is Shinnery Oak, which has a typical height of less than twelve inches.
