Subject: Male Variable Dancer, Argia fumipennis

Location: Upshur County, West Virginia

Stock Number: MVB-33

Comments: Ye gads, what color! Violet eyes, violet thorax and abdomen, a pale blue tip to the abdomen, and jaunty black accent marks.

This species used to be called the Violet Dancer, but its name was changed because its coloration is, well, variable. Over most of its range this species looks like the one in the photograph above. In the Southeastern states, though, the wings of the Variable Dancer are often quite dark, and nearly all of the abdomen black except the tip.

The dancer part of the name refers to the damsels’ characteristic flight, usually described as "bouncy."

Note: For a large number of photos of this and other damselfly species, see our West Virginia Damselflies website
