Subject: Female Variable Dancer, Argia fumipennis

Location: Stonecoal Wildlife Management Area, West Virginia

Stock Number: 0887

Comments: As with the birds, it is sometimes true that the female damselflies sport considerably less color than do the males. In the case of the Variable Dancer, the male is a striking violet color, while the female is brown. Still, the female coloration is not without a certain elegance.

Most damselflies prefer to perch on grasses (as in this photo), but the Variable Dancer is one species that is also found perching horizontally on the shore itself, or on rocks or logs nearby.

Note: For a large number of photos of this and other damselfly species, see our Odonata of West Virginia website
