Vermivora virginiae, Virginia's Warbler, Nevada photo

Subject: Virginia's Warbler, Vermivora virginiae

Location: Mt. Charleston, Spring Mountains, Nevada

ck Number: 10-29228

Comments: Alcorn (1988) classified Virginia's Warbler as an "Uncommon summer resident" in Nevada, and added that it is very seldom seen in the western part of the state. Pinyon pine forest is its most common habitat.

This pretty warbler is not named after the state of Virginia, but after the wife of the U.S. Army officer who was the first non-indigenous observer to notice the species. The scientific name means "Virginia's worm-eater."
