Comments: Bristol Bay is home to one of the largest Walrus haul-outs in the United States. Male walruses bask, doze, and fight, while females are farther north raising the young.

The Round Island haul-out is an Alaska state game refuge and has a couple of seasonal staff members who keep an eye on things.

The number of Walruses using the Round Island haul-out fluctuates considerably. The peak count was in 1978, when some 15,000 animals were counted. In recent years the numbers have failed to reach 3,000.
