Subject: White-tailed Ptarmigan, Lagopus leucurus

Location: 10 km south of Peel River Ferry, Northwest Territories, Canada

Comments: Ptarmigans (genus Lagopus) are in the Grouse family. This bird was photographed in the Northwest Territories, a locale where all three species of Lagopus may be found.

Unlike other members of the Grouse family, Ptarmigans are monogamous, and the males’ displays are relatively sedate.
